Inlaid contra partie, the rectangular top, front, sides and back inlaid with a cut-brass, pewter and tortoiseshell Bérainesque design, above a central frieze drawer with a kneehole cupboard door below, flanked to each side by three small drawers, the reverse with apparent drawers, flanked to each side by a pair of square-section scrolled brackets, on scrolled feet joined by an 'X'-shaped stretcher to each side, on paw feet

Lot Essay

This so called bureau mazarin is based on the model by Andrè-Charles Boulle (1642-1732) and upon the decorative designs of Jean I Bérain (1640-1711) Dessinateur de la chambre et du cabinet du Roi, many of which are illustrated in T. A. Strange French Interiors, Furniture and Decorations during the 17th and 18th Centuries, pp. 90-112.

The premier partie pair to this bureau was sold at Sotheby's, London, 3 April 1992, lot 76.
