Lot Essay

Milanese by birth, Giovanni Pandiani (d. 1879) studied at the Accademia di Brera under Pompeo Marchesi. Despite showing early signs of talent whilst at the Brera, it was not until 1846 that Pandiani really proved himself with the Bartolini-inspired work entitled Egle, which was shown at the Brera and is now at the Gallery of Modern Art in Milan. During the period 1858-1867, Pandiani spent most of his time in the workshops of the Duomo in Milan, however, in 1858 he exhibted a bust of Garibaldi, and then followed this with the present full-size figure, exhibited at the International Exhibition in London in 1862.

Italian patriot and military leader, Giuseppe Garibaldi (d. 1882) was one of the heroes of the Risorgimento. After involvement in the early struggles against Austrian rule in the 1830s and 1840s he commanded a volunteer force on the Sardinian side in the campaign of 1859, and successfully led his 'Red Shirts' to victory in Sicily and Southern Italy in 1860-1, thus playing a vital part in the establishment of a united kingdom of Italy. In his 1862 depiction, Pandiani shows Garibaldi in triumphant pose, celebrating his recent victories.

This lot is sold with the stereoscopic print, reproduced above, showing Garibaldi as he was photographed for the 1862 International Exhibition in London.
