A set of four Louis-Philippe/Napoleon III giltwood and tapestry armchairs
In the Louis XIV Style, Circa 1850
Carved all over with acanthus and shell motifs, two upholstered in a late 17th century style bold foliate design of flowers, the companion chairs with 18th century style foliate tapestries, each with a rectangular padded back, surmounted by a pierced cresting, above a pair of scrolled arms, each with a padded arm-rest and acanthus scroll terminal, on four pierced tapering baluster legs joined by an 'X'-shaped stretcher carved with acanthus (4)

Lot Essay

The pattern of their fretted and hermed pilaster legs, tied by volute-scrolled stretchers, relates to that of a late 17th century table in the Musée des Arts Decoratifs (see Metman et Briere, Le Bois, Paris, 1905, pl. LXIII)
