Lot Essay

Mary Swanzy first went to study in Paris in 1906. She was there at the crucial period, when Cubism was evolving, having a lasting influence of her work. She also saw works by Cezanne and Gauguin which helped her to produce very powerful and colourful landscapes in Provence, Italy and Czechoslovakia where she carried out relief work after the First World War.
