'Sir Patrick and Lady Ford were long-standing Lavery patrons (see lot 50). Throughout the twenties the Laverys regularly visited Westerdunes, Ford's house overlooking the ninth hole of the golf course at North Berwick for weekend parties. Lavery produced portraits of the Ford family for a comprehensive collection of his works which included examples of his Moroccan period along with Swiss, Scottish and golfing scenes.
The study for a crucifixion (verso) relates to a proposal to paint an altarpiece which came in 1927 from local nuns at Moira, Lavery's original home in Ulster - also a place for regular visits in the twenties. Another study for this commission exists in a private collection.'
