Lot Essay

The sitter is the artist's wife Hazel. The painting comes from a number of studies of Hazel reclining in a sunny garden which culminated in the large painting 'The Red Hammock' from circa 1923, in the collection of the Ulster Museum, Belfast (68 x 80 in.).
