Lot Essay

'A bold and vigorous painting, typical of many which Roderic O'Conor painted in his Paris studio between 1910-20. He often chose to pose his models either lounging or reclining on a divan, and he frequently used this alizarin crimson fabric as a background. In this case the draped fabric has received much less attention than the brilliantly lit nude figure, the painting of which shows all the characteristics of O'Conor's vigorous brush work and directness of approach'.
