'The overlaying brush strokes increase in boldness with the years and create the vitality of le Brocquy's painting. His images and heads may seem ephemeral, but their gentleness does not prevent them having real authority or even at times creating fear. When he uses colour, it is intense and shimmering like the blue backgroud of 'Head in Darkness''.
