JUDGEMENT SCENE, historiated initial 'D' from an ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM

[northern Italy ?Genoa, third quarter of 13th century]
71 x 53mm overall. Within the initial of pale pink and grey, against a brownish-pink ground and beneath a trefoil arch, on the left a man in legal dress with a red cap and robe, seated on two cushions, his right hand raised towards two youths in loincloths kneeling on a raised dais, the foremost apparently with his hands bound and concealed; on the verso the following words from an unidentified text [?d]uxit eni[m] sup[er] et interfec[?it] gladio miser[?rime] (slight losses of pigment from the background and robe). Mounted.

This fine initial showing an unusual secular scene may have illustrated a legal or moral treatise.
