2° (334 x 214mm). Printer's device B2 on title, ornamental headpieces and initials. Claude Garamond's Greek type (grecs du roi) in 3 sizes. Contemporary vellum. Provenance: Constantyn Huygens (1596-1697, title inscription with motto 'Constanter' and date 1642).

EDITIO PRINCEPS, the first classical work printed in Garamond's grecs du roi type, and the first of Estienne's publications of Greek manuscripts in the royal library. The Estienne Appianus is generally considered the best example of the use of the Royal Greek types: 'one of the most exquisite books printed from these fonts' (Updike, Printing Types I, 237). The elegant headpieces and initials are by Tory. The present volume was previously owned by Constantyn Huygens, poet, diplomat and father of Christiaan Huygens.
