BONAVENTURA, St. (1221-74). Legenda maior S. Francisci, in Italian: Vita e fioreti di Sancto Francisco. Milan: Uldericus Scinzenzeler, 1 December 1495.
Super-chancery 4° (210 x 146mm). Collation: s4 2s4 a-o8 p6 ( blank, r life of St. Francis, 2r letter to Antonio Andriense by Francesco del Balzo, 2v letter to Balzo from Jacopo di Laquedonia, 2r Visita ad Assisi di Francesco Sforza, 2r Interrogazioni fatte a Roberto Caracciolo della visitazione soprascritta, a1r title and woodcut, a1v prologue, a2r text, p5v colophon, p6 blank). 116 leaves (of 126, lacking first preliminary quire and final quire p). 41 (preliminary quire) and 43 (text) lines, double column. Type: 1:76R. Woodcut (113x94mm) of St. Francis receiving the stigmata, within woodcut border, woodcut ornamental initials from several sets. (First two quires detached, lower blank margin of 2 replaced, occasional small stains or spotting, some scribbles.) Early deerskin wrapper, missing two fore-edge ties (somewhat worn, numerous small incisions), in modern half red morocco box. Provenance: 17th-century names partly erased, early prayers.
RARE, only 3 other copies are recorded, none of which is complete. Goff recorded two copies: one at Holy Name College, Washington D.C., and one in the collection of Eric Sexton, and IGI records only the Biblioteca Ambrosiana copy in Milan. The Essling-Sexton copy (sold in these rooms in 1981) lacked the two preliminary quires; the Holy Name College copy lacks the second preliminary quire (containing del Balzo's letter to Antonio Andriense, etc.); and the Bibl. Ambrosiana copy lacks the title with woodcut and the final quire. The register in the final quire makes clear that the work had quires a-o8 p6, quire p containing the Rule of St. Francis. The woodcut was used in later editions of the same work printed by Scinzenzeler's heirs in 1503 and 1510. H 7329; IGI 4064; Sander 1167; Goff B-892.
