CICERO, Marcus Tullius (106-43 B.C.). Orationum, volume I. Venice: heirs of Aldus Manutius, and Andrea Torresanus, January 1519.
Aldine 8° (164 x 103mm). Volume I (of 3) only. Dolphin device on title, initial spaces with guide-letter. (Without one (of 2) final blank leaves, light dampstain in first and final leaves, small wormhole in first two leaves.) Contemporary Roman gold-tooled dark brown goatskin over thin pastepaper boards, the sides decorated to an interlace design with fillets, curling foliate tools, small tool include tongue-of-flames, fleur-de-lys and, above and below motto at centre, a dove, motto lettered SVAE QVISQVE (upper cover) FORTVNAE FABER (lower cover), the front cover also with title at upper edge, single quatrefoil in spine compartments (4 ties missing, discreet repairs at spine and corners). Provenance: early Italian inscription deleted form title, some marginal annotations; Rome, S. Pudenziana de Urbe (title inscription and stamp); Pompeius de Angelis.
A rare Aldine edition of the Orations of Cicero in a handsome Roman binding. De Marinis attributed the binding to the papal binder of Julius III. De Marinis 3000 (this binding); Ahmanson-Murphy Aldine Collection 152; Renouard 1519.1.
