2° (306 x 198mm). 4ff, 443 pp. Mostly Roman type. Woodcut historiated initials, Froben's woodcut device. Nineteen initials and similar number of typographical headings sprinkled with gold paint. (Slight marginal worming at beginning and end.)

BINDING: North Italian olive-brown morocco of c.1570, over pasteboard, covers panelled in gilt and blind, gold-tooled fleurons of two kinds in the corners, gold-tooled arabesque ornament in the centre, remains of coloured fabric ties (very slightly rubbed, spine-ends chipped.) Provenance: Odorico Pillone (presumably bought ready-bound, commissioned painting of the edges); Sir Thomas Brooke (bookplate); Berès 75.

VECELLIO FORE-EDGE PAINTING: three portrait busts of wreathed Roman emperors, both authors' names inscribed horizontally. Other edges pink marbled with red. FRESH CONDITION.

THE ONLY GOLD-TOOLED BINDING IN THE PILLONE LIBRARY.
