HAYDN, Joseph (1732-1809). Manuscript in a copyist's hand of the Piano Sonata in F Flat (Hoboken XVI number 52), 16 pages, 4to, blank leaves (pasted-on correction of approximately 2½ lines at the end of the Adagio).
A rare manuscript copy of this work. When Haydn left London in 1795, he seems to have left the autograph manuscript of the Sonata in F Flat behind, and it was later used for the Longman Clementi edition of 1799. Comparison of the present copy with the critical edition by Christa Landon gives a strong indication that it is taken from the published edition, but there are small inconsistencies which suggest the possibility of its being connected to the autograph via an intermediate copy. Its date is within a few years on either side of 1800. Hoboken observes that early manuscript copies of the Sonata in F Flat are rare, and all those he knew of were from the published editions.
