BATEMAN, Stephen (d.1584). A christall glasse of christian reformation, wheerein the godly maye beholde the coloured abuses used in this our present tyme. London: John Day, 1569.
4° (183 x 132mm). Title border of type-ornaments, 7-line extension to the errata pasted onto A3 verso, 39 half-page woodcut emblematic illustrations. (Title cut to edge of border and mounted, without A4 [?blank], small tears to margins, some old dampstaining.) 18th-century half speckled calf, spine in six compartments with raised bands, red morocco lettering-piece in the second, coroneted arms of the Earl of Dysart in the sixth, the others with flower-head tool. Provenance: Lionel Tollemache, 4th Earl of Dysart (1708-1770, Ham House, binding and inscription "NB This is only one Part of Bateman's Works, I have them all at Helmingham in ye Original old Curious Binding Viz Chritian Glass Latimer's Sermons Calvins Commentaries on ye Prophet Daniel Bullinger's Sermons Foxes Sermons Printed for John Day 1569 to 1570" facing title).
A VERY RARE WORK FROM ONE OF THE GREATEST ENGLISH LIBRARIES. It is interesting to note that the Sammelband mentioned by Lord Dysart in his inscription remained at Helmingham and was eventually sold at auction in June 1961 (Sotheby's, property of Lord Tollemache, 6 June 1961, lot 33 sold £1400 to Quaritch). Both the British Library and Bodleian copies also lack A4, presumably a blank leaf. STC 1581 (records 5 copies only, of which 3, including the British Library copy are imperfect).
