(SMALL WORMTRACK IN LOWER BLANK MARGIN FROM TITLE TO A3.) CONTEMPORARY SPECKLED CALF, SPINE GILT WITH MOROCCO LETTERING-PIECE. PROVENANCE: COPE, BARONET, HAMPSHIRE (19TH-CENTURY ARMORIAL BOOKPLATE). A VERY FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, with an intriguing provenance: Sir John Mordaunt Cope was Colonel to Gibbon's Captain in the Hampshire militia. Cope is mentioned by Gibbon several times in his Journal. Gibbon is known to have recieved copies of the Essai.. whilst serving with the militia. Norton 1; Rothschild I.937.
