2° (346 x 230mm). Title printed in red and black, printer's device on title, numerous woodcut mathematical diagrams in text, ornamental headpieces and initials. Greek, roman and italic type. (Lightly browned, light dampstain at fore-edge of final few quires.) 17th-century vellum, blindstamped arabesque medallion at centre, red edges (ties missing, rebacked preserving part of original backstrip, neat repairs on rear cover). Provenance: F. Allamand (inscription on flyleaf); New York Historical Society (stamp).

The complete works of Archimedes, one of the greatest mathematicians and physicists of all time. Among his contributions to mathematics and science is his discovery of the principle of specific gravity, a method for calculating the centres of gravity, an approximation of the value of and a system for expressing very large numbers.
