Lot Essay

The medallioned chair-back, with husk-festooned palm-flower, relates both to a chair pattern invented in the early 1780s and later illustrated in Messrs A. Hepplewhite & Co.'s The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 1788, pl. 6. It also relates to Gillows' 'Catherine wheel' pattern of the mid-1780s illustrated in L. Boynton (ed), Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, Royston, 1995, fig. 269).
A chair, with a related back and fluted front legs, formerly in the collection of Sir Sydney Greville, is illustrated P. Macquoid and R. Edwards, The Dictionary of English Furniture, 1924, vol. 1, p. 122.
