Lot Essay

The serpentine-framed chairs, with flower-inlaid backs displaying bird-inhabited and pedestal-supported vases, relate to a pair sold by The Lord Raglan, in these Rooms, 28 May 1981, lot 99. However, the present pair's acanthus-enriched legs terminate in eagle-claws rather than pad feet. Exotically-flowered antiquarian Dutch furniture of this type was greatly favoured for English bedroom apartments throughout the 19th Century.
