Lot Essay

This dressing-table with its three-quarter gallery, reeded edge and fluted tapering legs relates to one in the museum collection at Temple Newsam House, stamped by Gillows of Lancaster, with concave recessed front and with five drawers (C. Gilbert, Furniture at Temple Newsam House and Lotherton Hall, London, 1978, p. 380, fig. 500). Further dressing-tables of this design by Gillows, were sold by The 2nd Viscount Camrose, Hackwood Park, Hampshire, Christie's house sale, 20-22 April 1998, lots 356, 358, 359, 360.
