A PAIR OF REGENCY PLUM-PUDDING MAHOGANY AND MAHOGANY WRITING-TABLES
Attributed to Gillows
Each with rectangular dark-blue leather-lined top above a pair of mahogany-lined frieze drawers, with conforming simulated drawers to the reverse, on spindle-filled end-supports with square tapering downswept legs, brass caps and castors, one drawer with remains of old paper label, three castors stamped 'BT', the locks stamped 'PATENT', four legs with restored breaks

Lot Essay

The Grecian spindle-ends relate to an 1818 pattern in the Estimate Sketch Book of Gillows of London and Lancaster (G. Wills, Craftsmen and Cabinet-Makers of Classic English Furniture, London, 1974, p. 123.) A related rosewood table, bearing the stamp of James Winter (retailer) is illustrated in C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, Leeds, 1996, p. 497, fig. 1022.
