The moulded rectangular top inlaid with oyster veneered scrolling foliate cartouches, above two short drawers and three long graduated drawers each conformingly inlaid, the sides quarter-veneered on a moulded plinth base with later bun feet, the marquetry cartouches probably later, restorations to the marquetry

Lot Essay

The chest's marquetry acanthus-scrolled tablets correspond to those of a cabinet, bearing the date 1688, that was acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, in 1911 (O. Bracket, Catalogue of English Furniture and Woodwork, vol. III, London, 1927, pl. 35). They also feature on a chest-of-drawers from Irton Manor, Nr. Scarborough, Yorkshire, sold by the Trustees, Hollis and Webb house sale, 17 July 1950, lot 313 and on another, sold anonymously, Sotheby's London, 10 November 1995, lot 33.
