Lot Essay

Miss Jummy, a bay filly by Petrach, winner of the Two Thousand Guineas and the St. Leger Stakes in 1876, out of the ill fated mare Lady Portland, which was later killed by lightning in 1891, was bred by William, 12th Duke of Hamilton, in 1883. As a two year old she won the Buckingham, Rutland and Clearwell Stakes at Newmarket and continued to improve as a three year old, winning the One Thousand Guineas and the Oaks as well as the Nassau Stakes at Doncaster. However, she remained unable to compete with colts of the class of Ormonde and Minting in what was an especially good year. She was trained by Richard Marsh. Jack Watts, shown here, later became a Royal Jockey.

Much of the notable collection of sporting pictures inherited by Mary, Duchess of Montrose, is at Brodick Castle, Isle of Arran (The National Trust for Scotland).
