In comparison to his watercolours, examples of Thorburn's work in oil are rare: those included in Works by Archibald Thorburn, from the Thorburn Museum, 31 March 1993, as lots 21, 35 and 26 realised ¨£38,000,£24,150 and £23,000 respectively.
This example bears the following in inscription on the reverse of the frame: '3 Portsmouth St. London. W.C.2. 30/7/52 I have no hesitation in saying that in my opinion, this picture of Blackgame is an original painting by Archibald Thorburn. W.F. Embleton'; and 'September 30, 1952 In my opinion this picture of "Blackgame" is undoubtedly an original oil painting by Archibald Thorburn H Frank Wallace'.
William Fraser Embleton succeeded Baird Carter as Thorburn's dealer on the latter's death in 1919. Embleton would visit Thorburn in Hascombe on a twice monthly basis, delivering papers and paints to him, and collecting finished compositions for delivery to clients. He was also responsible for issuing printed reproductions of Thorburn's work.
Harold Frank Wallace (1881-1962) was a friend of Thorburn's who collaborated with Lionel Edwards in writing and illustrating Hunting and Stalking the Deer. His other publications include Stalks Abroad (1908) and The Big Game of Central and Western China (1913).
