Rathburne, a chestnut colt, was bred by Tom Cannon in 1899 by Gangway out of Gone Away. In 1901 he raced for the retired jockey Mr W.T. ('Jack') Robinson, who probably trained the two year old, and recorded a victory in the Worsley Nursery Handicap at Manchester.

In 1902, the year that this work was painted, Rathburne became the property of Lord Hamilton of Dalzell and ran fifteen times, winning the following seven races: the Swan Meadow Plate at Northampton; the Durham Plate at Leicester; the Bridge Plate at Hamilton Park; the Basford Plate at Nottingham; the Brighton Stakes; the Hamilton Summer Handicap; and the Caledonian Hunt Cup at Hamilton Park.

The following year Rathburne raced eight more times, winning the Lothians Handicap at Edinburgh.
