Lot Essay
This bowl has for many years formed part of an extensive private collection of Chinese ceramics, and it would appear that a Eumorfopoulos label from a Ru-type cup and saucer has at some stage been erroneously stuck on to this bowl. However, the present example has been carefully compared to the bowl in the Eumorfopoulos Collection catalogue and is definitely that listed as C22.
A similar bowl of this unusually large size was included in the Illustrated Catalogue of Sung Dynasty Porcelain in the National Palace Museum, Taiwan, 1973, pl.62. Several smaller examples are recorded: one numbered ba (eight), is in the Percival David Foundation, exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, 1935-36, International Exhibition of Chinese Art, Catalogue, no.1070; another from the Hirota Collection, was exhibited at the Tokyo National Museum, 1973, Catalogue no.51; a further example was included in the Min Chiu Society Thirtieth Anniversary Exhibition, Selected Treasures of Chinese Art, Hong Kong Museum of Art, 1990, Catalogue no.95; and a bulb bowl of this form, numbered si (four), illustrated by Y. Mino and J. Robinson, Beauty and Tranquility: The Eli Lilly Collection of Chinese Art, Indianapolis, 1983, p.220, pl.84. A particularly fine example of this form is in the Robert Chang Collection, and was exhibited Christie's London, 2 - 14 June 1993, no.7.
