A RARE DOCUMENTARY MING SANCAI TRIPOD CENSER
dated 26th year of jiajing (AD 1547) and of the period
The bulbous body elaborately modelled in relief with two confronted dragons among leafy scrolls with large lotus flower-heads, below the date inscription at the reverse and a narrow key-pattern band at the everted rim divided by two tall rectangular handles, one inscribed with the name of a temple, supported on three lion-mask feet, one foot restored
15 in. (38 cm.) high, fitted stand and cover with carved jade finial, fitted box

Lot Essay

The inscription below the rim reads Jiajing ershiliu nian liu yue zao, which may be translated as: 'Made in the sixth month of the twentysixth year of the [reign of the] Jiajing Emperor', corresponding to the year 1547, around July/August. The inscription at the side of one handle reads Zhenwu Miao, the Zhenwu Temple.
