A FINE PALE GREY JADE ARCHAISTIC LIBATION VESSEL

Of oval shape with a wide spout and squared loop handle, delicately carved around the exterior with a wide band of geometric motifs between two confronted dragons below the rim and ruyi-lappets above the base, all divided by a lion mask in high relief below the spout and a sinuous chilong at the handle, the high slightly spreading foot with twisted rope motifs and a narrow key-scroll band, the pale beige-grey stone with some darker speckles at the spout

Compare the similar slightly smaller cup in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, which is dated to Song or Yuan period, 13th-14th century, exhibited Chinese Jade Throughout the Ages, The Arts Council of Great Britain and The Oriental Ceramic Society, 1975, Catalogue no.310, pp.95 and 97; related jade cups of similar dates are included in this exhibition, nos.307-313.
