A LARGE MUGHAL-STYLE CHLOROMELANITE VASE AND COVER
19th century
Of flattened baluster shape, the sides carved and pierced with an upright serrated leaf, curling at the waisted shoulder to form a handle suspending loose rings, the sides carved in low relief with a symmetrically arranged single flower-spray below a similar floral composition at the neck, the domed cover similarly carved to either flattened side and terminating with a large multi-petalled flower-head finial with four leaves, the stone of black-flecked rich green colouration with white streaking, minute nicks

According to an analysis through X-ray powder diffraction by the Dept of Mineralogy at the Natural History Museum, the present material should be described as jadeite, with evidence of characteristics of chloromelanite, which is closely related.
