Lot Essay

These 'flambeaux' are of identical model to the set of four probably supplied by the ciseleur-doreur Antoine-André Ravrio to Fontainebleau in 1804. Recorded in the salle à manger de Madame Mère and in the premier salon de la reine de Hollande in the 1807 inventory, they may well be amongst the 'douze paires de flambeaux or mat de divers modèles listed in the Mémoire de 27 brumaire an XIII (18 November 1804). They could, however, conceivably have been supplied by Claude Galle, who in 1799 is recorded as owning 'Une paire de flambeaux à trépied or matte' valued at 54 fr (J.P. Samoyault, Pendules et bronzes d'ameublement entrés sous le Premier Empire, Paris, 1989, fig. 188, p.200).
