The overall design of this tabouret reflects the 'Antique' style promoted by Charles Percier and Pierre Fontaine in their Recueil de Décorations Intérieures of 1801. A related stool, supplied by Jacob frères during the Restauration for the château de Saint- Cloud, is now in the Mobilier National, whilst a similar pair of stools by Jean Louis was sold anonymously at Sotheby's London, 12 December 1986, lot 296.
