Franois-Honoré-Georges Jacob and Georges Jacob employed the stamp Jacob D. rue Meslée between 1803-13.
This Imperial throne is almost identical to the suite of six fauteuils, two canapés, eight chaises and two firescreens supplied by Jacob-D. rue Meslée for the salon de l'Impératrice at the Palais des Tuileries. Supplied on 10 February 1808 and upholstered en étoffe brocart or et argent à fond bleu by Boulard, the suite was subsequently regilded by Pauwel-Zimmerman in 1845 and delivered to the Grand Trianon for the use of the King and Queen of Belgium. First recorded in the Tuileries in the 1809 Inventory, the suite is discussed in D. Ledoux-Lebard, Le Grand Trianon, Paris, 1975, pp.184-6.
The distinctive tapering baluster leg carved in relief with scrolls and stylised foliage is characteristic of the oeuvre of Franois-Honoré-Georges Jacob and Georges Jacob and also featured, for instance, on the celebrated suite supplied by the latter to Prince Louis Bonaparte and Hortense de Beauharnais for the hôtel de rue Cerruti circa 1804-6. Of this suite, three pairs of fauteuils were sold anonymously in these Rooms, 12 December 1996, lots 179-82. Similarly, the winged sphinx arm-supports, scrolled toprail and splayed back legs are also shared with a further fauteuil supplied by Jacob frères for the Garde-Meuble Impériale, which is illustrated in E. Dumonthier, Chairs by the Jacob Brothers, Paris, 1921, p.31.
