Lot Essay

Inlaid with a musical tophy within a Grecian ribbon-fret frame, this bombe commode is closely related to the documented oeuvre of Nicolas Petit, who was elected maître in 1761. Established 'au nom de Jésus' in the rue du Faubourg-Sainte-Antoine, Petit's oeuvre was initially almost exclusively acquired by fellow ébénistes and marchands. In the latter part of his career, however, he concentrated on his activities as a marchand-ébéniste, enjoying the patronage of the duc d'Orléans, the duc de Bouillon and the Princesse de Hesse amongst others. A commode with closely related ribbon-fret, bell-husk mounted angles and triglyph-mounted apron stamped by Petit is illustrated in A. Pradère, French Furniture Makers, London, 1989, p.292, fig. 324.
