In both proportion and carved decoration, these fauteuils are characteristic of seat-furniture in the fully-developed late Louis XVI style and share much in common with the oeuvres of the celebrated menuisiers Georges Jacob (maître in 1765) and Jean-Baptiste Claude Sené (maître in 1769). In particular, the distinctive legs en carquois featured upon the suite of seat-furniture supplied by Sené in 1788 for the Bedchamber of Marie-Antoinette at Saint-Cloud at a cost of 22 livres per fauteuil (B.Pallot, Furniture Colections in the Louvre, paris, 1993, Vol. II, no.56, p.158), whilst the foliate-trailed seat-rail, heavy scrolled arms and stop-fluted blocks also share much in common with the suite of seat-furniture supplied by Georges Jacob to Charles-Auguste de Deux-Ponts for Karlsberg Castle (G.Jeanneau, Les Sièges, Paris, 1967, p.154, fig.297). However, the unusual laurel-wrapped sroll-over toprail pre-empts seat-furniture of the Consulat period.

The bell-husk trailed pannelled seat-rail also featured upon a pair of fauteuils by Antoine Bonnemain, sold from the Espirito Santo collection in these Rooms, 12 December 1996, lot 12 (£17,250), as well as on a suite of seat-furniture sold anonymously at Christie's Geneva, 8 May 1973, lot 83.

The celebrated collection of French furniture formed by William Waldorf, 3rd Viscount Astor at Cliveden included the superlative pair of porcelain-mounted bonheurs-du-jour by Martin Carlin, originally possibly acquired from the marchand-mercier Dominique Daguerre for Spencer House, which was sold by the Executors in these Rooms, 29 June 1967, lot 95.
