Lot Essay

These triton candelabra display similarities to the oeuvre of Barthélemy Prieur (A.Gibbon, Bronzes Franais du Grand Siècle, Paris, fig. 33), but their inspiration may well derive from the Slodtz dynasty. Sebastian Slodtz (1655-1726), a pupil of Franois Girardon, and his sons Sebastien, Paul Amboise and Réné Michel all worked for the Crown as both sculptors and designers and were in turn appointed as Dessinateurs de la Chambre du Roi.
Three pairs of this model, described as Louis XV, were sold anonymously at Sotheby's London, 24 November 1989, lot 254 (£24,200), 12 June 1992, lot 138 (£5,940) and 10 June 1994, lot 22 (£12,075) respectively.
