On the Beach, Bexhill On Sea

The sitter is the artist's first wife, Gwendoline Hillman whom he married in 1919. They had three daughters, Diana, Elizabeth and Pauline before the marriage was dissolved in 1927. The family frequently spent their summer holidays during the 1920s on the Sussex coast.
