Gill was commissioned by Captain Sidney Smith, a Witney blanket manufacturer, to carve a plaque to replace a window on the front elevation of his new stone house in Witney, Oxfordshire. The house had been designed by Gill's friend and patron, the architect, Oliver Hill, between 1926 and 1930, and it was he who introduced Smith to the artist. Gill produced a series of drawings between August and October 1935 which he sent onto Captain Smith for his approval.

The plaque was intended to commemorate the family in a light-hearted manner as well as celebrating Captain Smith's trade: it bears the initials of Smith and his wife Dorothy, with those of their children, David and Susan who toss their baby brother, Paul in a 'Witnedown' blanket. The family's black cocker spaniel, Beaver is also present.
Gill began to carve the panel on 27 February 1936 and worked until 5 March. It was then sent to Witney and he completed the job in situ between 30 June and 4 July.
