Nevinson joined the Red Cross as a volunteer in the autumn of 1914, to be discharged as unfit for active service in 1916. He returned in 1917 as an artist attached to the Bureau of Information. Towards the end of the War he began to turn again to London and Paris subjects, casting a scathing and critical eye on the world of society, music halls and nightclubs. The present work is a study for the painting 'War Profiteers' (36 x 28 in.) which is in the collection of the Russell Cotes Art Gallery, Bournemouth.
