Lot Essay

Bomberg embarked on a six week painting expedition to Scotland and Derbyshire during February and March 1932 with the painter Lilian Holt. They managed to fund the trip from the sale of a Palestine painting but lived in a tent throughout. Lilian accompanied him on all subsequent painting trips and they eventually married on 16 September 1941.
