A SOSHU TANTO IN FINE MOUNTS
Mumei, Muromachi Period (16th century)
The blade hirazukuri, mitsumune with shallow sori, running itame-hada with ji-nie, midare hamon of nie with sunagashi and some tobiyaki, atobori of Fudo and gomabashi, mumei o-suriage nakago, 146in. (36.1cm.); in a natural karaki wood saya with two shibuichi kanamono formed as lizards, gilt rimmed shakudo fuchi-kashira with fine ishimeji surface with a scholar and children in iroe takazogan, with signature Kanoto-torii ki Natsu Natsuo kore tsukuru, mokkogata shakudo tsuba with the seven wise men in a bamboo grove in iroe takazogan, with signature Kanoto-torii shujitsu Natsuo kore tsukuru and kao, shakudo menuki formed as a feather brush and a ken, gilt details, shakudo kurikata carved with bamboo, similar uragawara carved with a rock, shakudo kozuka chiselled with waves and a gilt cherry blossom, signed Yasuchika zu Ichiriu Tomotsune and kao, plain silver kojiri, Edo Period (late 19th century)
