A Leaf-tea Caddy In The Form Of A Covered Jar
Meiji Period (Late 19th Century)
One of the two main panels shows a Ranryo dancer and the other the bugaku arena (formed by a curtain) and drum for the performance, the drum, the curtain and the inside of the dancer's outer robe in an unusual technique in which the form is carved out of transparent horn and the decoration painted on the underside of the horn, the subject inlaid in raden, tortoiseshell, stained ivory and horn on a kinji ground surrounded by inlaid silver borders, between the main panels two medallions of cloisonne set into a ground of brocade patterns in togidashi, hiramakie and usu-niku takamakie, the foot of the jar surrounded by a silver rim of lotus form, the base of gyobu, the neck with a silver liner, nashiji interior, a silver lid fits inside the neck and an outer silver cover, formed as a fukusa tied over a lid with a tasseled cord, completes the composition, the fukusa carved with a ho-o bird surrounded by kiri mon and karakusa, the underside in gyobu lacquer, with a bag and a kijimakie karakusa stand
