Lot Essay

This is one of a group of especially finely decorated small writing boxes with heart-shaped inkstones apparently made around the turn of the Edo (1615-1868) and Meiji (1868-1912) periods. Other examples include one by Nakayama Komin (1808-1870) depicting the Ogurayama theme (see 1 below) and an unsigned example in the Victoria and Albert Museum depicting a Chinese table (see 2 below).
