The first kogo decorated in iroe takamakie on a roironuri ground with a lobster, fish and a fruiting branch, signed Kwansai; the second kogo decorated in iroe hiramakie and takamakie on a roironuri ground with a rat, its head turned towards a leafy branch and a fish swimming by a young pine, signed Kwansai; and a canted-square three-tiered box and cover decorated in gold and silver hiramakie on a roironuri ground with stylised chrysanthemum and peony buds, the inside in mura nashiji, signed Sada and kao, some old wear

Lot Essay

Kwansai was a member of the famous Koma family of lacquerers. He is now best remembered in the West as the master of Zeshin but was himself an important artist. He worked from about 1800 until his death in 1835.
