A Small Gold Lacquer Tray
Signed Yasushige, Meiji Period (Late 19th Century)
Decorated in hiramakie, takamakie, togidashi and kirikane on a kinji ground, the well of the tray finely decorated in Shibayama style of carved inlays of raden, stained ivory, silver and tortoishell on a lacquer ground with anthropomorphic rats engaged in such pursuits as mochi-making, porterage, fishing, drinking sake, eating daikon, fording a river and climbing a rope ladder, amid cherry blossom, chrysanthemums and other flowers, beneath a cliff on top of which is a temple, the border with sakura and various leaves in usu-miku-takamakie on a nashiji ground, bordered on each side with a silver rim, the underside and four short feet nashiji in earth-red lacquer, the signature carved in katakiri bori on an inlaid raden plaque
