The first signed Yoshikiyo saku
The first carved in the form of a bamboo shoot, but this is actually a "Trojan horse" for two men seated at a table playing go, with five others standing around them watching the game, all of which is carved through a hole in the front of the bamboo shoot measuring 0.5 x 0.7cm, circa 1800; the gold lacquer netsuke carved in the form of two goke [a pair of lidded containers for go counters, one for black and the other for white stones], in order to make a compact composition the forms of the containers have been moulded into one another, the shippo design decorations in hiramakie and usu-niku takamakie on a kinji ground, the silver ring himotoshi and boss with silver and gold washers in the form of kiku
2.3/8 x 0.7/8 x 1in. (6 x 2.2 x 2.65cm) and 1¼ x 26 x 16in. (3.2 x 5.7 x 3.3cm.) respectively (2)

Lot Essay

Although Yoshikiyo did also carve animals, etc., he made at least one more example of this subject (see Lazarnick, p. 1234) and another of a chestnut, also with a small hole in the front, inside which was carved a go-ban and two players - but no onlookers.
