GASTALDI, Giacomo (c. 1500-c. 1565). La nova descrittione della Lombardia. Venice: Donato Bertelli, [third quater of the 16th century].

Engraved map of Northern Italy on two Royal sheets joined, overall 486 x 758mm (engraving 486 x 734mm). Title and dedication in cartouche with scalebar, graticule border. (Trimmed along upper and lower edges to plate mark, some dicolouration, tears along old folds neatly repaired on verso, join reinforced, some marginal repairs on verso.)

This very rare map, by Bertelli after Gastaldi, covers the full length of the river Po, from the Alps to Venice taking in the coastline of Genoa towards Florence. Its execution must be dated to before 1559, for by that time he had been granted the privilege for this map by the Venetian Senate. This is a previously unrecorded edition, and is presumably a precursor to the 1570 edition, published by Antonio Lafreri (Tooley 353). Not in Tooley, who records a single sheet map by Fernando Bertelli dated 1565, and the 1570 Lafreri Rome edition; watermark similar to Woodward 321 but smaller.
