BERTELLI, Fernando (fl. 1556-1572). Nova descrittione di tutto il Ducado di Milano, del Piamonte, del paese, de Svizzeri, et gran parte di altre regioni confinanti. Venice: by the author, 1567.
Engraved map of the Duchy of Milan 338 x 483mm (engraving 295 x 450mm). Title set in a decorative strapwork cartouche set at the centre of the lower margin, scalebar and dividers at lower left corner, the seas decorated with galleons and barges. (Some light staining, some strengthening on verso, later pen-and-ink inscription on verso.)
This fine map, covering Piedmont, Liguria, and part of Lombardy, does not, as the title promises, show the whole of the Duchy of Milano, or include Switzerland. It is supposed that those parts not included on this map were printed on a second sheet. However, no second sheet is known to survive. Bertelli's representation of Piedmont was completely new, owing nothing to similar works by other cartographers. It is also one of the most unusual of Bertelli's works and differs considerbaly in style from his other work he produced in Venice at the same time. Tooley 389, recording 19 examples.
