BARATERI, March'Antonio and Bernardino BASSANI (engraver). Nuova descritione del stato di Milano con tutti li suoi confini. Milan: Giovanni Battista Bonacina, 1636.
Engraved map of the Duchy of Milan on four Royal sheets joined, overall 1024 x 805mm. Dedication set in a decorated strapwork cartouche surmounted by the arms of Milan, legend set in a smaller strapwork cartouche, compass rose, scalebar and dividers, graticule border, dedicated to Girolamo Fagnano. (Trimmed to image, some slight discoloration, lightly inked on lower left corner.)
A rare early strike with many guidelines still visible. This large and detailed map covers the Duchy of Milan from the Alps to the Ligurian Riviera and ia an accurate study of the river Po and its tributaries. Bassani or Bassiani was an engineer active in Milan. Thieme-Becker lists only one work by him, a portrait dated 1641, of Gomez Suarez de Figueroa de Cordoba, Duke of Feria and Governor of Milan. Little is known of Barateri, save the two prints on which his name appears, the present work, and a map of Lombardy, published in Milan and dated 1701.
