ANONYMOUS. Fiorenza. [Rome]: Claudio Duchetti, [c. 1580].

Engraved bird's-eye view of Florence set against the surrounding hills, 314 x 438mm. Title in scrolled ribbon, arms of the Medici and Florence placed in upper corners, with key to the major buildings in the city. (Trimmed to platemark and laid down, some discolouration.)

An early view of Florence. The earliest view is an unique woodcut, 1496-90, now in the Kupferstich Kabinet, Berlin. This is a fine early strike, with many guidlines still visible. Tooley and Marcel Destombes, the author of a checklist of maps in the Bibliothéque National in Paris, both mistook 'Mugnone f.', identifying the river which flowed past the northern walls of the city, to be the name of the engraver.
