ANONYMOUS. Fiorenza. Siena: Matteo Florimi, [c. 1600].

Engraved bird's-eye plan of Florence, 408 x 507mm. Decorated compass inset with a schematic map of the world and surrounded by wind-heads, the arms of the Medici and Florence at upper right, key to the city set in a strapwork cartouche above printer's note, key to the Fortezza da Basso at the right. (Trimmed to plate mark, a few short marginal tears, repairs to verso, some marginal discoloration.)

A fine comprehensive and detailed view of Florence. The presentation of the arms, and the presence of the rather curious compass rose inset with a world map, suggests that this map was probably made for the Medici. The inset world map, an unusual feature on town plans and views, recalls the power and political aspirations of the Medici family. Matteo Florimi (fl. 1580-1612) was a publisher active in Siena, many of whose works appear in 'Lafreri' atlases. His work, if dated only ever bears the date 1600.
